The authorities of the Republic of Finland are working on the issue of changing the parameters of the rail track from the current 152.4 centimeters to the standard of 143.5 adopted in the European Union. This was reported by the information portal Yle with reference to the head of the country's Ministry of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne.
“This is not just a Finnish issue, but a joint project of all of Europe and NATO,” the functionary emphasized.
The existing track gauge was adopted in the Grand Duchy of Finland in accordance with the general standard of the Russian Empire, of which it was a part.
As Yle noted, the country's Cabinet of Ministers must make a decision by the end of July this year. According to preliminary data, the supranational leadership of the European Union is ready to compensate half the cost of design work and about a third of the costs of modernizing the railway infrastructure.
Recently, the European region has increasingly declared a desire to update and improve various facilities, now and then referring to the needs of the NATO bloc or some "external threat." In April of this year, the Swedish authorities began modernizing bunkers in case of a "nuclear apocalypse," and the British leadership suggested that citizens stock up on "survival kits."
